The Other Boleyn Girl is a story about Anne Boleyns sister, Mary Boleyn- and how she was mistress to the king for 5 years and had two children to him before her sister Anne caught his eye.
Here is Mary:
For those of you who dont know who Anne Boleyn was (and please dont think I am insulting anyones intelligence here - but I dont just want to 'presume' anything because this post will make no sense otherwise), she was the second wife of henry VIII of England who married Henry in 1533 after being his mistress for many years and then she was executed by Henry in 1536.
You can get her biography of the internet if you want to know more. She was, by all accounts an amazing woman, with an even more amazing story, whose remains were only dicovered under the reign of Queen Victoria hundreds of years after her death.
Anyway, I couldnt put this book down - it is seriously a remarkable piece of work. A few historical innacuracies (as is to be expected when historians cant even agree among themselves about many things) but for the most part, it is historically accurate.
I personally love the Tudors and so relished the chance to read this when I got a copy. I really does take you directly into the privvy chambers of Henry VIIIs court (ie, it does what it says on the tin).
It is not just a womans novel, either - it really is more of an historical piece in its own right - in fact, men may find it VERY interesting to read things from a womans point of view, as it is told in the first person through Marys eyes. I cried buckets at the end - I mean cried literally for about half an hour nonstop (i mean we all know how it ends, right?)
For those of you who are interested in English medieval history or the monarchy, I cannot recomment it enough - seriously.
It has recently been made into yet another film about the Tudors, titled the same as the book. I can already tell from the trailor that some parts of the book have been altered for the film, but it looks very good nontheless. Here is the trailor:
