I haven't seen this for two reasons: (1) I don't want to see Sly overweight; (2) I hear it's very violent and I don't enjoy violent films (Rocky violence is different to me somehow).
But I hear that after Rocky, this is Sly's best role. Would someone like to give me a run down on the movie?

Violent??? There's a shootout at the end, but it's no worse than the evening news.
No run down from me. Nope. Get thee to a video store now. And nobody else give her anything either. She SHOULD see this movie.
Original, Sly is first and foremost an actor. He SHOULD be transforming himself from film to film. You should be proud of him for shedding his muscular safety net for this part. Compare that to Nic Cage who refused to wear "goopy Asian makeup" for his brief turn as Fu Manchu in "Grindhouse" recently.
And Sly's not even really "overweight". He's... big. He doesn't really look flabby to me, just big. Like Jay Leno kind of big.
Trust me. You'll love "Cop Land". Go watch it.

I've never seen this flick either - i'll give it a go considering its Sly, lol (and because you recommend it, too Bum)
I second what Bum has said - no spoilers here then till me and nora have watched it! You can review it though - thats cool - kinda like the blurb on the back of DVD covers

But I hear that after Rocky, this is Sly's best role. Would someone like to give me a run down on the movie? That's a shame. It's one of the most credible films Sly has made, and his acting in it is superb. I'll give you a bit of a rundown without spoiling anything. First of all, he doesn't look all that overweight. He doesn't look that bad. He only looks as bad as he can look, which isn't that bad. Let's face it, the guy is a natural athlete. Secondly, his character, Freddy Heflin, is easily his most likeable character since Rocky. He's an insecure, somewhat goofy, somewhat incompetent sherriff in a town dominated by NYC cops who live "across the bridge" in New Jersey, in Freddy's town. Slowly but surely Freddy begins to understand that there is a degree of corruption going on and begins to unravel a scandal that turns his whole world upside down. He gradually takes a stand and become the hero that the film foreshadows that he had within himself. It's an incredible film.

Copland is by far the best acting performance by Sly alongside Rocky (the original), he went so damn close to get an Oscar nomination for that role and IMHO he didn't get it only because his chances to win were far too many for Hollywood "gurus" once he was nominated........bloody bastards

Yeah, there was huge oscar talk for Sly when it came out. Died off pretty quick, though.
I presonally believe that RB knocked Cop Land down to Sly's third best performance.

Sly won the 1997 Best Actor award at the Stockholm Film Festival for Cop Land This movie and Sly deserved so much more! Such an excellent movie...and I love the "turtle" relationship he created with the character

Sly isn't bad in this movie. He's just got a little pudge. I can still see some of his muscle underneath. Apparently he gained 40 pounds by eating giant pancakes from a local place and lost the weight by the time they did reshoots. ;D
