You know, this film is absolutely bursting with evidence of great effort. It was a real college try. Stallone was in the most perfect, torturously conditioned shape of his career, the script was pretty decent, it had political relevance (incidently it does today as well), and was well acted.
In Sly Moves, Stallone blames the lack of success on a pact we signed with the Soviets shortly before the film's theatrical release that made them "our new buddies". I'm not a hundred percent convinced, but there probably is something to that. Personally I think the opening sequence of scenes tainted the film more than he realized.
He was stick fighting in Thailand. Stick fighting. In Thailand.

I don't think the stick fighting had anything to do with it. In fact, I find it very entertaining but that's one's own preference.
I watched some of the extras on the Rambo III DVD and he mentioned that when the film was released, like you said, the Soviets became our friends and the collapse of the USSR began. Although I would still think some people during that time had some feelings of negativity towards the Russians still. I think, too, if I remember correctly because it's been a while since I saw that featurette, because of the Soviets now being our friends, and the movie portraying them as enemies, the film, I think, also got a limited release so to speak.

A limited release because of politics? I would have been furious if I were Sly.

I saw video of people picketing "Rambo III" at theaters.
I really enjoy how they gave Rambo a sense of humor in this one. That was endearing.
Does anyone find it funny how Kurtwood Smith gets like third or fourth billing in the film, and he's in it all of three scenes?

First Blood was an excellent movie that needed NO sequels IMHO The way America treated their guys back from Vietnam was awful and Sly did well in pointing that out I am italian and I never had to deal with the Vietnam war, I think it was one of the wars the US did to get back at Soviets, but nevermind if the war was wrong (as it was), the point os the guys who went there were mainly volounteers, patriots, who deserved better once back home. First Blood captured all that. Part II was pretty much a bodybuilding contest with Sly running alone for the first prize Part III........guys you can't actually watch a guy pretending to heal a wound like John Rambo does in the movie (firing it........) and avoid laughing so hard to be thrown out of the theater........

First Blood was an excellent movie that needed NO sequels IMHO "Rambo: First Blood Part II" was made because of "Rhinestone". Eh, just roll with it, baby. It's dumb, yeah, but these are movies (well NOT "First Blood", but the sequels) that are fully in the genre of "80's-Idiot-Action-Movies". "Commando" has tons worse.

I don't know anything about it........ yes, Commando was even worse........if you count how many guys get killed by Arnie on the island........ ;D ;D ;D

what's with the Rhinestone/Rambo II connection? I don't know anything about it........ Rhinestone nearly killed Sly's career. Hoping to gain lost ground, Sly struck back with both a Rambo and a Rocky film in 1985 and was back on top again.

That's why Sly recently hinted to the fact that when he was obsessed to shed "Rocky" from himself he went into a few too many bad movies that almost (almost?) kill his career........man I consider Cobra and the flick with Sharon Stone, and Assassins and Carter's revenge, and the one in which he was in jail among them........total crap! Copland was awesome

Whoa, whoa... I loved Lock Up. Great Sly performance. Great Conti score. Assassins wasn't too bad either.
"The Specialist" is treading "Rhinestone" territory.

Original, nobody is going to buy the premise that Dolly Parton can turn Sly-freakin-Stallone into a country music star. It's just a bad premise... coupled with the double whammy of Sly warbling some truly terrible songs (he at least fared better singing in "Paradise Alley"), and you've got a recipe for disdain. I mean, I know you like it... but, are you sure you're feeling okay? I'm pretty sure "Rhinestone" is officially recognized as the lowest point of Sly's career. Hell, Sly even acknowledged that when MGM told him they'd destroyed all the Rocky outtakes: "Oh, but I bet you have prestine 'Rhinestone' outtakes in a vault."

Original's a sweetheart and loves so many of Sly's movies. She can't criticize the guy. I haven't actually seen Rhinestone (I saw about ten seconds of it on Encore, the Free Willy Marathon channel) so I can't make that judgment call. But if it was that bad a premise, what kinda coolaid was MGM drinking? And for Sly to make it, what was he thinking?

Master, the worst thing is... Sly was thrown off "Beverly Hills Cop" and turned down "Romancing the Stone" to do "Rhinestone"!

Master, the worst thing is... Sly was thrown off "Beverly Hills Cop" and turned down "Romancing the Stone" to do "Rhinestone"! Lol... Man, you're reminding me how bad the 80's were for movies in general. While I know those films would have boosted his career at the time, I doubt they would have added oscars to his trophy case.
